I dump lump. Don't remove ash often. Probably have a pantload of ash behind the fireboxes...wouldn't know. Live where temp ranges from-30 to +95 yet my vent settings for 250 never change. J…3 · -

I would bet that your ash grate was installed upside down (bevel up). Different co-efficient of expansion between iron and ceramic...iron forces crack in firebox. That is common with all the eggs.2 · -
